【HANKEIDO】Maki Fude - Jakuto Fude (Sparrow-Head Brush)

【HANKEIDO】Maki Fude - Jakuto Fude (Sparrow-Head Brush)

A brush suitable for copying sutras made by HANKEIDO, with 400 years of tradition and expertise since its establishment in the first year of the Genwa era.

The JAKUTO FUDE is a representative type of "Kamimaki Fude" with a sparrow-shaped tip suitable for transcribing and other minor writing tasks. Highly recommend for Shakyo (sutra copying.)  This brush preserves the oldest form of Japanese brush-making, dating back to the 8th-century Tenpyo period, with original examples still housed in the Shosoin Imperial Repository.
*Maki Fude was the predominant brush-making technique until the end of the Edo period.

Ancient Wisdom for Modern Control: This is a Kamimaki-fude (paper-wrapped brush). By wrapping the core hair in Japanese paper, the brush gains a unique structural integrity. This provides you with a firm, stable tip that responds precisely to your touch—ideal for the careful, disciplined lines of sutra copying.

A Fluid Creative Flow: The characteristic "plump" shape of the brush belly acts as a reservoir, holding a generous amount of ink. This allows you to write many characters without interruption, helping you stay in a state of "flow" and deep concentration.

Thoughtful Ergonomics: Shakyo requires focus over time. This brush is intentionally crafted with a shorter handle and bristles to reduce fatigue in your shoulders and eyes, making your practice an enjoyable, sustainable ritual.

Refined Materiality: Using a blend of Kolinsky and Shigou (rabbit hair), this brush offers a sharp, "live" tip that captures the subtle nuances of your hand’s movement.

筆 from 攀桂堂 Hankeido

HANKEIDO is a unique workshop in the world that exclusively carries on the ancient craft of making "Maki Fude (written as 巻筆)" that have been handed down through generations, preserving the tradition and demonstrating exceptional Shokunin spirit. Here, brushes known as "MAKI FUDE (巻筆)" , also called "Yūshinfude" (written as 有芯筆), are meticulously crafted .
"Yūshin-fude refers to a type of brush pen where hairs are wrapped with Japanese WASHI paper around a core and then topped with additional hairs.
All 18 types of the oldest brushes preserved in the Shōsōin (Imperial Repository) from the eighth-century Heian period in Japan are of the yūshin-fude type, and they represent the most ancient form of brushes that still exist today.
