【KISHU】KISHU SUMI, made of precious pine soot

The clear, yet thick Sumi color of KISHU SUMI is made of 100% pine-soot and Nikawa glue. Its color and beautiful ink bleeding can be enjoyed to the fullest.

Kii Kumano region, blessed with deep mountains and old pine trees, has been famous for its high quality pine-soot.
Pine-soot Sumi ink stick of this region enjoyed a great reputation during Edo Period. Supported by Shogun Yoshimune, a member of the Kii Tokugawa family, it was recognized as shogunate's official Sumi ink.

Mr. Horiike, the ONLY pine-soot artisan who makes pine-soot in Japan now, revived the traditional pine-soot manufacturing in the region. He produces pine-soot in Shoji Daki Way and makes pine-soot Sumi, KISHU SUMI also.　

Its use ranges from calligraphers to full-fledged Suiboku-ga (ink painting) artists.

墨 Kishu Sumi

With its deep mountains and ancient pine trees, Kishu was an ideal location for pine soot production. For generations, this region has been a key supplier of pine soot to Nara, where the majority of sumi ink sticks are manufactured.

Kishu sumi also boasts a historical significance, as it received the endorsement of Tokugawa Yoshimune, a shogun from the Kii Tokugawa clan, becoming the official sumi ink used by the shogunate.

Mr. Horiike still continues to produce pine soot using the traditional "shoji-burning method. Currently, Mr. Horiike is the only one who continues to produce pine-soot in Japan.
