【創業400年 攀桂堂】Nukina Suoh Brush

【創業400年 攀桂堂】Nukina Suoh Brush

Brushes made by HANKEIDO, with 400 years of tradition and expertise since its establishment in 1615.
These brushes are named after Nukina Suoh, a Confucian scholar, calligrapher, and literati painter, who is also know as one of the "Great Three Calligraphers of the Late Edo Period."

Nukina Suoh commissioned Hankeido to create a special brush for him and even now, over 150 years later, it bears the original label from that time.

Among the questions frequently received from our customers, one topic stands out: tool maintenance. In conversations with brush shokunin, we learned that straightening the bristles after use can significantly alter the touch of the brush in the next use.

In order to provide a great experience in washing brushes for those who respect the spirit of Shokunin and wish to take extra care of their favorite brushes, we offer a limited quantity of a brush-dedicated comb.

It's been mentioned that there used to be shokuinin in Japan who produced these combs, but unfortunately, they have retired, and we are currently dependent on imported products. The shokunin themselves prefer using domestically crafted combs that have worn down teeth, as shown in the photo. However, the product we are offering is a new imported item, so the teeth length is consistent ☺️.

Brush Dedicated Comb (Small Size): 4.9cm × 1.6cm
*Currently, we are offering only the small size, which is ideal for maintaining KASHIN and KASUI. If you desire other sizes, please contact shop@rimpamura.com.

筆 from 攀桂堂 Hankeido

HANKEIDO is a unique workshop in the world that exclusively carries on the ancient craft of making "Maki Fude (written as 巻筆)" that have been handed down through generations, preserving the tradition and demonstrating exceptional Shokunin spirit. Here, brushes known as "MAKI FUDE (巻筆)" , also called "Yūshinfude" (written as 有芯筆), are meticulously crafted .
"Yūshin-fude refers to a type of brush pen where hairs are wrapped with Japanese WASHI paper around a core and then topped with additional hairs.
All 18 types of the oldest brushes preserved in the Shōsōin (Imperial Repository) from the eighth-century Heian period in Japan are of the yūshin-fude type, and they represent the most ancient form of brushes that still exist today.
