Collection: 櫛 Brush comb
rimpamura provides combs that are suitable for precious brushes.
The brush shokunin employs an array of tools in the craft of brush making, each filled with wisdom and ingenuity to achieve the creation of beautiful and functional brushes.
Among these tools, pay close attention to the highly crucial implement, the metal comb (center of the photo). Years of use have resulted in its center being worn down. While terminology may vary depending on the region of brush making, it plays a vital role in brush crafting, such as "nukiage" (removing the cotton hairs from the raw hair) and "neri-maze" (thoroughly mixing the hair).
Have you ever felt frustrated when a brush hair divided into a few parts for some reason? In the pursuit of various expressions, brushes endure significant stress. The inner hairs may become twisted, and without proper cleaning, they can solidify in a twisted state, leading to potential issues.
As part of your brush cleaning routine, consider combing the brush with a brush comb. This not only extends the brush's lifespan but also ensures a smooth writing experience the next time you use it. The brush comb, with its thin teeth, effortlessly reaches into the core of the brush. To prevent damage to the brush hairs, be sure to use it when the brush is thoroughly soaked in water. Alternatively, you can use a regular comb that you have. Give it a try and see the difference!"
The Japanese craftsmanship thrives on a division of labor system, where specialized shokunin dedicated to crafting these tools contribute their wisdom and ingenuity behind the scenes. Unfortunately, it's disheartening to note that there are no longer shokunin in Japan who create combs for brush making like this. The comb we provide for maintenance is not made in Japan due to these circumstances.
Shokunin san said that Japanese-made combs are delicate yet possess strength, making them indispensable for achieving subtle expressions. Even if they are slightly worn down, they remain the best choice. We can only hope for the revival of shokunin who specialize in making brush combs in Japan.
