【彩煙墨:紀州松煙】 Gold & Silver Sumi Ink
【彩煙墨:紀州松煙】 Gold & Silver Sumi Ink
"Gold and Silver" sumi ink sticks made by Mr. Masao Horiike.
The most significant feature is that, besides enjoying each color individually in gold and silver, you can combine them with other sumi inks for various expressions. Like other solid sumi inks, it is ground on an inkstone. Due to its compatibility with other solid sumi inks, you can mix it with regular solid sumi inks for blended colors or layer it over ink-drawn surfaces, allowing for diverse applications.
Whether for traditional sumi-e painting or suibokuga painting, sumi ink wash painting, or calligraphy art, this sumi ink offers versatility.
Please grind it on an inkstone like regular solid sumi inks. (A density similar to or darker than regular solid sumi inks is recommended.)
If you want to intensify the gold and silver colors, let the ground sumi ink sit for about 5 minutes, discard a bit of the top liquid after the gold and silver components settle, and then use it. Using it on strongly dyed paper or surfaces can enhance the effect.
Gradient
One of the significant advantages of using colored sumi ink, rather than watercolor or gouache, is the lack of cloudiness when blending colors. For instance, by applying ground sumi inks of different colors to different areas with a side brush, you can create beautiful gradients.
Transparent Mixed Colors
Due to the good compatibility between sumi inks, when mixing them with regular solid sumi inks or other colored sumi inks, the unique transparency of the ink is preserved.
Overlapping Lines
One characteristic of sumi ink lines on Japanese paper is that lines drawn or painted first will appear on top of any lines drawn later. Try this in scenes like a snowy night. First, draw snow with white sumi ink on a pure white paper. You do not see anything at this point. Then, boldly fill over it with a black sumi ink. You should see the previously drawn snow emerge on top. The wonder of solid sumi ink! 😊

墨 Kishu Sumi
With its deep mountains and ancient pine trees, Kishu was an ideal location for pine soot production. For generations, this region has been a key supplier of pine soot to Nara, where the majority of sumi ink sticks are manufactured.
Kishu sumi also boasts a historical significance, as it received the endorsement of Tokugawa Yoshimune, a shogun from the Kii Tokugawa clan, becoming the official sumi ink used by the shogunate.
Mr. Horiike still continues to produce pine soot using the traditional "shoji-burning method. Currently, Mr. Horiike is the only one who continues to produce pine-soot in Japan.
